a mated pair

In the film 'AVATAR' the Na'vi people are patient and wise.
They hold fire, and after a while they decide who their mate is going to be.
and they enter into this intimate exclusive relationship and they mate with each other and nobody else and what they have is so special.
surely this is a pattern we should all follow.
